As a Canadian of Dutch descent, speed skating has been an important presence in Arne Dankers' life since he first committed to the sport at just eight years of age.

Now 26, Dankers is one of the leaders on an experienced and talented long track speed skating squad entering Turin. A particular threat in long distances, he has qualified for the 1500m, 5000m, 10000m and Team Pursuit.

Dankers was ranked first nationally in the 5000m in 2003-04, and that remains his strongest individual event. He broke the Canadian record at that distance in November of 2005, and also finished sixth and seventh, respectively, at World Cup events in Salt Lake City and Turin last year.

Dankers' greatest threat for a medal likely comes in the Team Pursuit event. The men's squad has been smashing records in that event for some time, first breaking the Canadian World Cup record in Berlin (2004) and, more recently, breaking the world record at a World Cup event in Calgary.

A welcomed presence on the team, Dankers is able to keep things light while focusing on the goals at hand. He balances his training and competitive schedule with part-time studies in electrical engineering at the University of Calgary.

He attended the 2002 Salt Lake City Games as an alternate, and will look to build upon that experience in Turin this year.
