Although Steve Omischl constantly battled asthma as a child, frequently ending up hospitalized, he never let it be a handicap for him. In fact, the only handicap the 27-year-old ever wants to talk about is his 5-handicap at golf, a passion he may pursue professionally once he is ends his current career as one of the world's top aerial freestyle skiers.
The North Bay, Ontario native, who now lives and trains in Lac Beauport, Quebec has been a force to be reckoned with from the day he first burst onto the World Cup scene. He won the Rookie of the Year award after the 1999-00 season and has been one of the best ever since.
Although he finished in second place in the World Cup standing last season with 11 Top-10 finishes in 13 starts, he still managed to win the 2005 World Championship in a memorable performance at Ruka, Finland. One year prior to that season, he had six wins on the World Cup tour, finishing the campaign with the number one ranking. It was a far cry from his disappointing 11th place finish at the 2002 Olympics. A finish he will be sure to remember as he prepares for Turin in 2006.
Another key factor Omischl has working in his favour is the fact that he emerged the winner at the only pre-Olympic test event of 2005 at Sauze d'Oulx - the site of the freestyle competition for the upcoming games.
