The success on the international stage over the past year enjoyed by Jeffrey Buttle and Emanuel Sandhu was the best thing that could have ever happened to figure skater Shawn Sawyer. Their achievements abroad have earned Canada the right to send three men's figure skaters to Turin. And thanks to his bronze medal, captured on his 21st birthday at the 2006 Canadian National Championships, Sawyer will be joining his higher profile teammates in Italy.

Although Sawyer is often overlooked, it should not be forgotten that he won the Canadian title as a novice in 2000 and the Canadian Junior title in 2002. In 2003, he would come in sixth-place at the Junior World Championships. Sawyer would move to the senior ranks for good in 2003, coming in sixth at the Canadian Senior Championships.

In 2004, he would begin to make some noise on the international stage, coming in fourth at the Cup of Russia and ninth at the NHK. The year 2005 would also see some strong results, most notably a sixth-place result at the ISU Four Continents and a seventh at the Cup of Russia.

Sawyer says his favourite skaters growing up were Canadian legends Brian Orser and Toller Cranston.
