Although it looks as though he's lost his seat in Serge Despres' two-man sled to David Bissett, Nathan Cunningham should still get a chance to compete in the four-man race in Turin.

A natural athlete growing up in Calgary, Cunnigham loved team sports, playing hockey, baseball and football. By the time he arrived to the University of Calgary, football had taken over as his primary sport. He played receiver for three years with the Dinos while also pursuing a degree in engineering.

Cunningham is the third member of Despres' four-man sled to come to bobsleigh with a background in football. David Bissett played at the University of Alberta while Steve Larsen played at the University of Manitoba.

Cunningham's compact, powerful build coupled with his serious wheels made him a natural for bobsleigh. He joined the national programme during the 2003-04 season, racing mostly in Jayson Krause's four-man sled. That season, he had three Top-15 results on the World Cup tour.

By the 2004-05 campaign, Cunningham was racing in some two-man events with Despres. That year, the pair most notably enjoyed a 17th-place finish on the Olympic track in Turin. This season, he managed a couple of Top-20's in two-man races with Despres, as well as three Top-20 results in the four-man.

Capturing a medal at the 2006 games won't be easy for Cunningham, but it should be a great learning experience with the Vancouver Games just four years away.
