Sherry Lawrence grew up in her hometown of Calgary in the shadow of the 1988 Games, and that experience has no doubt inspired her to pursue her own Olympic dreams this year, at the 2006 Turin Games.

The 22-year-old still trains at the National Alpine Training Centre in Alberta, but she has been doing a great deal of traveling in, this, her first year on the World Cup Circuit.

Lawrence's rookie campaign has thus far been a successful one. She finished 11th in the downhill in very windy conditions at a World Cup event in Val d'Isere Switzerland -- in what was only her third race on the tour. She has also posted solid results in the super-G, with a 35th at Bad Kleinkirchheim and a 36th in the same event in St. Moritz in January of 2006.

Prior to the World Cup, Lawrence was a fixture on the Nor-Am Cup circuit, where she posted a ninth in the downhill at Le Massif, Quebec, in March of 2005. Later that year, in December, Lawrence's familiarity with the local mountain clearly paid off when she captured the gold in downhill on her home turf of Lake Louise, Alberta.

Though Lawrence will be far from home in Turin this year, she will look to further establish herself as one of the rising stars of Canadian skiing and learn a great deal during her first Olympic experience.
